What we know about the Zika virus: Who is in it and why?
CNN health and science writer Dr. Thomas Frieden is calling the outbreak of Zika a public health emergency.
He says the outbreak is a public emergency and is unprecedented in history.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Monday that it has been monitoring an average of 21,000 cases per day, and is currently monitoring an additional 7,000 infections per day.
Frieden says the virus has been identified in the population in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, India, Mexico and China.
He says more than half of the cases are thought to be the result of Zika infections in pregnant women.

“What we know now is that the virus is in the blood of many of these women, and that’s been the issue,” Frieden said on CNN’s State of the Union Sunday.
And, he says, a lot of them have a virus that was found in the fetus that is still there, so it’s still being passed along to the baby.
I would not want to get pregnant at the moment, he said.
We have a lot more work to do.
But, Frieden says, if the Zika outbreak were to continue, the CDC expects the number of cases to increase.
If the number was still small and the number were not very high, I would not worry too much about the virus.
However, he is concerned about the increase in the number and severity of cases and their spread.
On Monday, he told CNN’s Jake Tapper the Zika is being transmitted in many parts of the Americas, including Brazil, which has seen an uptick in the Zika cases.
He said the virus in the country is transmitted via direct bite from a mosquito, and it is being passed on through mosquito bites.
At the moment there are not a lot people getting tested because we have the virus isolated from these mosquitoes, and because we don’t know where it’s coming from.
Tapper asked Frieden if it was possible that more people might be infected if the number continues to increase and the virus spreads more widely.
In response, Friede said there is no indication that this is a problem that is going to be limited to just a small area of the country.
When asked if the CDC was concerned about Zika-related deaths in the U.S., Frieden told Tapper: I think we are in a much better position to understand this than we were yesterday.
What we can say is that there is a significant number of people who have contracted the virus, and there is an elevated number of deaths.
As of now, he believes the number in the region of the United states is around 7,600.
A total of 4,300 people have died in the area.
There is a high-level of concern about the potential for the virus to be transmitted from the infected person to their family members and close contacts.
There is also concern about whether people who are infected with Zika could become pregnant.
It’s unclear if the virus can be transmitted through direct contact, or if people who get the virus from mosquito bites will be at risk.
The virus is spread through direct bites of the mosquitoes that carry it.
While the U, S. and Canada have been working to contain the spread of the virus as quickly as possible, other countries, including China and the United Middle Kingdom, have not been doing so.
Earlier this week, the World Health Organization issued a report that said that at least 2.5 million people have been infected in Zika-affected countries and that 1.8 million more are thought.
